The Isle of Wight community have come together to raise £500 for an elderly man who was recently attacked and stripped of his pension money in Ryde.

Local taxi driver Paul Floyd hosted the fundraiser late last week with the aim of raising £100 to help the man in his 60s.

The unnamed pensioner is said to have been strolling the High Street near St Mary’s Passage late at night after having a drink at the Wetherspoons. This is where he was robbed of £100.

“The couple are already struggling with bills and the cost of living, and after this attack, the man is not sure about leaving the house again. He usually did not carry this amount of money with him, especially at night, but that’s not the point”.

The crowdfunder was so successful it went over the £100 sought 5 times, with Paul now closing the donations page saying:

“Thank you so much everyone, I am in disbelief but also amazed and grateful for everyone’s generosity!
