Pension Credit: How to Claim the Right While TV License Payments Arrive for Over 75s | Personal Finances | Finance

The pension credit is now used as a marker by which TV Licensing judges whether a person over 75 can get a free license. Following the changes of August 2020, many over 75 will now have to pay for their license when they previously had a free right. However, the impacts on this group due to COVID-19 cannot be denied, and in February the BBC announced a “transition period” due to the pandemic.

As a result, older Britons were given more time to work out their arrangements and decide what to do next.

But today, this transitional period is drawing to a close, which means there is a time to take stock for those affected.

Seniors will now only be able to get a TV license for free if they receive a pension credit, or a reduction in other circumstances, such as if a person has a visual impairment.

If a person wishes to continue with a television license – which must be held by those who watch live television on any channel – then they will need to take action regarding the pension credit.

To be eligible, people must live in England, Scotland or Wales and have reached the statutory retirement age.

The pension credit exceeds a person’s weekly income at £ 177.10 if they are single, and a common weekly income at £ 270.30 if they have a partner.

The supplement is known as the “guarantee credit” and constitutes the first part of the pension credit.

However, if a person has savings or a second pension, they could benefit from the “Savings credit” part.

In addition to a free TV license for those over 75, pension credit recipients will also be entitled to other forms of support, including help with NHS costs and cold weather payments.

The BBC has confirmed that nine out of ten customers out of 75 have now made arrangements for their TV license.

TV Licensing says, “We want to help older people get a proper license.

“So we’re writing to those we haven’t heard from yet to let them know we’re here to help and to encourage them to reach out to our dedicated customer service advisors. “
